Your example of China taking Taiwan for the knowledge of TSMC is bang on. But truth be told if this occurred it would cripple Western electronic, telecommunication, automotive and internet economies because these sectors are so dependent on TSMC. Even more incentive for the move. The truly sad part is 20 years ago Intel chose to spend money forcing manufactures to use Intel products rather than continuing innovation and America gave away technical advantage for short term financial gain.
